ADVANCED BALANCE SYSTEMS IMPROVES BALANCE WITH WALKASINS

Loss of sensation in the feet increases the incidence of falls in people over 65. WalkasinsTM is a novel insole for the shoe that uses vibrations to help improve balance. Trials have shown that users walked with more confidence and the immediate benefits of wearing WalkasinsTM are comparable to 3 to 6 months of exercise therapy.

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY AND TOSHIBA BRING A NEW DIMENSION TO PHOTOS

Since 1863 when the first London Underground line was opened, engineers have inspected its infrastructure by walking tunnels at night with a notepad, making notes of any cracks. Now innovative technology, developed in collaboration between the University of Cambridge Engineering Department and Toshiba’s Cambridge Research Laboratory, allows 3D reconstruction of the tunnels, making it possible to automate this process and prioritise repair work.

CAMSTENT PRODUCES ‘NON-STICK’ COATING FOR CATHETERS

It was a ‘eureka’ moment for CamStent founder David Hampton when he realised that a polymer, designed to prevent moss sticking to roofs, would have huge benefit in the medical industry to stop bacteria colonising urinary catheters. His invention has the potential to save the NHS £100 million, the cost of treating urinary infections.

COSMOS LASERS TO PROVIDE TECHNOLOGY FOR PORTABLE DIAGNOSTICS

Fast and accurate medical diagnosis can save lives, and COSMOS Lasers hopes to turn diagnostic laser technology from laboratory based systems into portable field devices. Accurate medical diagnostics for diseases such as malaria often require laser-based spectroscopic or visible image analysis of thin microscopic samples. These techniques can be improved using tuneable lasers, which are unfortunately large and expensive, and are beyond the means of most hospitals in malarial zones.

ELLEXUS MAKES INSTALLATION ON THE CLOUD A BREEZE

Installing new software and migrating systems to the cloud is to become easier with Breeze, a unique dependency tracing software tool from Ellexus. Colourful graphics are used to show how your program interacts with your computer so you can solve installation issues or help your customers solve a problem remotely. It works like an x-ray into the program showing what the system looks like inside so engineers can see the cause of a problem easily. Such is the power of Breeze that its first customer is microchip-giant, ARM.

ENLIGHT CUTS ENERGY USE AND HELPS KEEP STREETLIGHTS WORKING

As some councils consider turning off one in every ten street lights, EnLight provides a solution that slashes energy bills while actually improving the service we get from our streetlights. EnLight allows remote control of all streetlights, so they can be lit and dimmed from a central point, and faults can be detected remotely, making an engineer’s job more efficient.

HANDY ELEPHANT HELPS SAVVY NETWORKERS MAINTAIN RELATIONSHIPS

A Cambridge entrepreneur has developed a productivity app that extends the skills used to maintain stable relationships in the real world into social networking. Benjamin F. Wirtz, founder of Handy Elephant, says it is not communications technology but the capacity of the brain that limits the number of stable relationships you can maintain.

SMART ARCHITECTS KEEPS PASSWORDS SAFE

The problem of using the same weak password repeatedly was highlighted when users had their personal data stolen from Sony’s PlayStation network earlier this year. Every month, hundreds of thousands of people are affected by similar incidents. To tackle the problem, Smart Architects have created sCrib, a small device which plugs into a USB port and stores twelve cryptographically-secure passwords. It is easy to use, improving convenience at the same time as increasing security.
